What We’re Looking For

Join us as a Senior Game Designer to help us solve the unique design challenges of Kinstrife, a genre-blending medieval sandbox that combines combat, strategy, RPG progression, and party management without falling back on traditional genre conventions. You’ll be designing the advanced systems that build on our established core, tackling problems like creating strategic depth without a bird’s-eye map view, or balancing long-term campaign progression across dozens of hours. This role requires a systems thinker who can translate high-level vision into detailed, interlocking mechanics that feel grounded.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and balance gameplay systems related to character progression, procedural mission generation, diplomacy, and resource management that build on our established core mechanics
  • Collaborate with a narrative designer to ensure quests and storylines create meaningful systemic consequences in the worldEvaluate and iterate on new features using prototyping methods before implementations
  • Own the pacing and flow of the campaign experience, ensuring the game remains engaging within and across play sessions
  • Coordinate within the design team, serving as a bridge between systems design, narrative design as well as implementation, ensuring alignment with our design pillars
  • Use playtesting feedback and data to refine designs, identify trade-offs, and prioritize features that deliver the most value to players

What’s Needed

  • 7+ years of experience in game design, with a proven track record of shipping titles or reference work
  • A deep understanding of player psychology and the ability to design complex, interlocking systems for strategy or non-linear RPG titles
  • Hands-on experience and ability to apply prototyping techniques (in or outside of the engine) to test and iterate on ideas
  • The ability to use data and playtest feedback to refine designs, identify trade-offs and figure out what features will add the most value to our players
  • Excellent written and verbal English skills, capable of producing detailed design documentation and collaborating closely with a remote, asynchronous team
  • Highly self-driven with a systems-oriented mentality. You work best when given context and goals, rather than daily task lists. Capable of taking a high-level goal and owning the larger system, from research to implementation
  • Experience with and passion playing games in our genre-space, specifically games that blend combat, strategy, RPG, and management

Bonus Points

  • Basic scripting/programming experience
  • Professional experience working in Unity

Portfolio

Please share examples of your design work, which may include:

  • Design documentation (GDDs, system specifications, feature breakdowns)
  • Case studies or postmortems explaining design challenges you’ve solved
  • Systems modeling work (spreadsheets, progression curves, economy designs)
  • Links to shipped games with a brief explanation of your specific contributions
  • Prototypes or design experiments (paper, digital, or video documentation)
  • Slides or videos of conference talks

We understand much design work is under NDA. If you can’t share anything publicly, please describe 2-3 design problems you’ve solved and your approach to solving them in a general manner.
